EPIC Urges FCC to Protect Data of Callers to the 988 Crisis Hotline System
July 30, 2024
EPIC urged the FCC to protect and reassure 988 callers by prohibiting the collection of geolocation information, by prohibiting carriers from disclosing caller data, and by requiring carriers and vendors to meet basic cybersecurity standards. EPIC also recommended that the agency use a georouting method that cannot collect more precise location data in the future, that it be transparent about the harms of NCI so that would-be 988 callers can be re-assured that the agency understands their fears, and to include non-988 hotlines if it convenes stakeholders about 988 privacy.

EPIC Joins Public Knowledge in Supporting FCC Rule that Prohibits Digital Discrimination in Broadband Accessibility
July 12, 2024
Public Knowledge, joined by EPIC, in its amicus brief argued that the FCC's mandate to make communications technology available to all Americans dates back to at least the 1930s. The advocacy groups' brief included arguments that the Telecommunications Act of 1996 explicitly included a nondiscrimination provision to further this mandate, that the disparities made clear and made worse by the COVID-19 pandemic gave rise to the IIJA in which Congress more explicitly compelled the FCC to meet its mandate of universal service for communications technologies.
