EPIC, Coalition Urge the White House Office of Management and Budget to Halt DHS’s Harmful AI Systems

EPIC joined a coalition of over 140 organizations led by Just Futures Law to push The Office of Management and Budget to use its authority to stop the Department of Homeland Security’s use of non-conforming artificial intelligence systems to inform or make decisions regarding surveillance, deportation, and detention.

Senators Call on DHS to Investigate Federal Funding of ShotSpotter
May 15, 2024
In a May 14 letter, Senators Ed Markey, Ron Wyden, Elizabeth Warren, and Representative Ayanna Pressley, called on Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Inspector General Joseph V. Cuffari to investigate DHS’s funding of ShotSpotter, including potential violations of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

EPIC Commends FTC’s GTL Data Breach Settlement, Urges Tailored Remedies
December 22, 2023
EPIC commended the FTC for taking enforcement action against prison communications company Global Tel*Link (GTL, now known as ViaPath) for unfair and deceptive trade practices related to a 2020 data breach exposing the personal information of hundreds of thousands of incarcerated persons and their families, friends, lawyers, and other contacts, as well as to the company's subsequent further misconduct.

GAO Report: Federal Agencies Are Not Complying with AI Requirements
December 12, 2023
The Government Accountability Office (GAO) released a report reviewing federal agencies’ compliance with AI requirements, such as use case inventories. The report found that of the 20 federal agencies that reported planned and current uses of AI, 15 agencies’ use case inventories contained inaccurate and incomplete information.
