EPIC, Coalition Call on Government to Declassify Type of Company at Issue in New FISA Definition
May 14, 2024
On May 9, EPIC joined a coalition of over 20 civil society organizations in calling on Attorney General Merrick Garland and Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines to declassify the type of service provider at issue in a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC) proceeding that led Congress to expand the universe of companies subject to compelled cooperation under Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA).

ODNI Releases Framework for Commercially Available Information
May 10, 2024
On May 8, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) released its framework for commercially available information. The new framework sets out guidelines for intelligence agencies’ purchase and use of commercial data, but does not restrict the types of data—such as location or web browsing information—agencies may purchase.

EPIC Applauds FTC Prohibition Against Avast’s Disclosure of Sensitive Information for Advertising Purposes

Avast marketed software to consumers that the company promised would limit tracking online by blocking invasive third-party cookies. But even as it promised privacy protection, Avast collected and sold consumers’ sensitive browsing information to third parties.

EPIC, Coalition Urge Opposition to RISAA Absent Votes on Key Reforms
April 5, 2024
EPIC and a coalition of privacy, civil liberties, and civil rights groups wrote a letter to Speaker Mike Johnson and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries expressing our strong opposition to the Reforming Intelligence and Securing America Act (RISAA), H.R.7320, and urging them “to oppose its consideration on the House Floor unless members have the opportunity to vote on amendments that were critical components of this legislation’s negotiated introduction” – including amendments to close the backdoor search and data broker loopholes.
