Boston Globe: ‘The law needs to catch up’: Secret recordings by police before Mass. high court in test of wiretap law

“I’m sure it’s very tempting for many police departments to want to put all of these surveillance technologies like Callyo into use,” said John Davisson, litigation director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center, a nonprofit privacy advocacy research group based in Washington, D.C.
But, he said, federal and state wiretap laws reflect longstanding safeguards to protect private conversations from law enforcement interception, unless there is compelling justification approved by a court.
“The proliferation of new surveillance technology doesn’t relieve police of their obligation to follow the law.” Davisson said. “It’s important that police are scrupulous and courts are scrupulous in holding police accountable.”
