EPIC Joins Over 35 Organizations to Defend Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s Consumer Complaint System

June 25, 2025

EPIC joined Consumer Action and over 35 other organizations to call on the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) to maintain public access to the CFPB’s complaint portal system. EPIC signed on to Consumer Action’s letter urging the CFPB to maintain the complaint system and ensure that consumer complaints receive timely responses. The CFPB maintains a complaint portal that allows consumers to file complaints about financial disputes such as credit reporting errors, mortgage servicing problems, deceptive debt collection practices, credit card fraud, and more. The CFPB’s complaint portal routes consumer complaints to relevant financial institutions, and the CFPB is required to provide a timely response to consumers. The CFPB also maintains a public consumer complaint database with information about consumer complaints filed against financial institutions. The database is a valuable resource for consumer advocates, researchers, and consumers who are shopping for financial products and services.

The CFPB’s complaint system is a critical resource for consumers who are struggling to resolve disputes with financial institutions—over 3 million complaints were filed with the CFPB in 2024. Despite the popularity and value of the CFPB’s consumer complaint system, Trump administration officials currently leading the CFPB have threatened the Bureau’s ability to maintain the consumer complaint system through its attacks on CFPB staff and attempts to slash the CFPB’s budget.

EPIC routinely calls on the CFPB to strengthen protections for consumers. Recently, EPIC filed comments in support of the CFPB’s proposals related to medical debt, comments on the CFPB’s Personal Financial Data Rights Rulemaking, and comments on the CFPB’s now withdrawn proposed revisions to Fair Credit Reporting Act rules, which among other changes would have clarified that data brokers must comply with FCRA.
