EPIC Urges FCC to Provide Robust Oversight, Accountability, and Transparency in IoT Cybersecurity Label
September 5, 2024
EPIC recently submitted a comment to supplement the previously filed joint comments to call on the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to ensure robust oversight, accountability, and transparency for the Cyber Trust Mark program, a voluntary cybersecurity labelling program for Internet of Things (IoT).
EPIC urged the FCC to improve its U.S. Cyber Trust Mark program by: 1) ensuring that the standards-setting process is transparent and open to consumer groups to participate so that consumers feel confident in the rigor of the Trust Mark; 2) providing ongoing oversight that prevent products from being wrongfully introduced into the marketplace in the first instance; 3) addressing potential conflicts of interest between Cybersecurity Label Administrators and the Lead Administrator; and 4) implementing penalties for non-compliance that serve as effective deterrents.
EPIC has been an active consumer advocate in the FCC’s Trust Mark proceeding. EPIC regularly comments on regulations and testifies on policies to promote better cybersecurity practices that protect consumer data from unauthorized access and other misuse.
