New Jersey Comprehensive Privacy Law Takes Effect
January 16, 2025

The New Jersey Data Privacy Law took effect on Jan. 15.
Nineteen states have enacted privacy laws of varying strength in recent years. Many, including New Jersey’s, are modeled off of Connecticut’s law, which contains many loopholes and carve-outs that make it insufficient for meaningfully protecting privacy. However, New Jersey legislators closed some of these loopholes and granted limited rulemaking authority to the state’s Attorney General to help implement the law. The New Jersey Attorney General will conduct rulemaking on the law throughout 2025.
EPIC and Consumer Reports recently published a strengthened version of the Connecticut Data Privacy Act that would both provide consistency for business and meaningful privacy protections for consumers.
