Calli Schroeder

Senior Counsel and Director of the AI & Human Rights Program

Calli Schroeder is Senior Counsel, Director of the AI and Human Rights Program, and Global Privacy Project lead at the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC), a non-profit research and advocacy center dedicated to securing the fundamental right to privacy in the digital age for all people. She is a leading advocate for privacy, fairness, and transparency.

Calli leads EPIC’s program on international privacy. In this work, she tracks and contributes comments to international policy developments to push them toward stronger privacy and human rights protections, represents EPIC in international coalitions and fora, and fosters relationships between global privacy experts and EPIC. She frequently speaks and presents at international conferences and regularly engages with international Data Protection Authorities.

Calli also acts as the Director of EPIC’s AI and Human Rights Program, developing EPIC’s work on AI policy and strategy. She highlights responsible, transparent, and privacy-protective design, development, and application of AI systems and provides perspective on AI risks and harms to lawmakers, enforcement bodies, and the public.

Calli has published articles on privacy risks in XR technology, universal ethical standards in human subject research, FTC unfairness enforcement, intangible privacy harms, artificial intelligence frameworks, GDPR application to clinical trials, and more. Calli has been interviewed on programs like CSPAN and Fox 32 Chicago and has been quoted in numerous publications including the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Wired, 404 Media, and ProPublica. She serves on the Steering Committee of the TransAtlantic Consumer Dialogue (TACD).

Prior to joining the EPIC team in 2021, Calli acted as a Westin Research Fellow for the International Association of Privacy Professionals, interned with FTC Commissioner Julie Brill, and later performed international privacy compliance and security work for clients at both law firms and compliance companies. Calli holds a J.D. from the University of Colorado Law School and a B.A. from Whitworth University, where she majored in Peace Studies and minored in Philosophy and Theology. She is a member of the Colorado Bar.
