CBC News: Why some U.S. TikTok users are deleting the app
February 1, 2026
“I think it’s fair to address the elephant in the room of the current U.S. political climate and why things like precise location information and inferences like race and immigration status are so concerning,” EPIC Senior Counsel Calli Schroeder told CBC News. “ICE is targeting a lot of people for mass deportations, and the concern that this information could be used or combined with government searches in this way is a valid concern.”
“Whenever you’re restricting something that has been much more free range, it’s going to feel like a form of control and a form of censorship, and people typically do not respond well to that,” Schroeder said. “I think that’s a good part of why we’re seeing such strong pushback in this case, but if we did have a strong privacy law on the books it would mitigate a lot of these concerns rather than leaving it to individuals to have to pick and choose what apps they use to try and protect their safety.”
