In testimony submitted last month in support of the bill, the Electronic Privacy Information Center agreed that halting the sale of precise geolocation data would “put a stop to some of the most harmful abuses of our personal data happening today.”
EPIC noted that addressing these issues has become even more urgent amid reports that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has purchased software that allows the agency to track millions of Americans via their cellphones.
“Nothing in this bill would prevent companies from using precise geolocation data for legitimate business purposes,” the group added in a Jan. 28 letter to state lawmakers. “It simply says they should not sell that very sensitive data for profit.”
