EPIC Joins Bipartisan Coalition Calling on State AGs to Hold Apple, Google Accountable for Platforming ‘Nudify’ Apps

May 19, 2026

On Tuesday, EPIC and a bipartisan coalition of 55 U.S.-based civil society groups led by UltraViolet Action called on state attorneys general to take legal action against Apple and Google for platforming deepfake or “nudify” apps.

“The evidence is clear: Apple’s App Store and Google’s Play Store are driving and profiting from the deepfake abuse epidemic, and the consequences are severe — both for survivors, and for our society at large being numbed to this scale of abuse against women and children.” the coalition’s letter reads.

The companies’ app stores offer dozens of these AI apps, which allow users to generate non-consensual exploitative materials (NCEM), also known as deepfake pornography. The most infamous example of this alarming trend is xAI’s chatbot Grok, which is integrated into the X app and was used to create an estimated 3 million sexual deepfakes, including an estimated 23,000 depicting children, in just 11 days.

Leading tech and finance firms blatantly and disrespectfully disregarded formal requests from bipartisan coalitions of state attorneys general to take decisive action against the proliferation of NCEM.

As part of this coalition of civil society groups, EPIC is calling for legal action from state and territory attorneys general against the companies responsible.

EPIC has long pursued robust, common-sense AI and platform accountability regulations as part of its AI & Human Rights Project and platform governance work
