Privacy Daily: FTC Finalizes Student Privacy Settlement After 2021 Breach

“The Electronic Privacy Information Center asked the commission to strengthen the data-minimization requirements in the proposed settlement order in January (seeĀ 2601070028). Following the finalized order, EPIC Deputy Director John Davisson told us in an email that the center is ‘encouraged that the FTC adopted most of EPIC’s recommendations to strengthen the data minimization section of the Illuminate Education order.'”

“‘There’s a growing understanding across the political spectrum that protecting privacy means setting down real, enforceable limits on the processing of personal data,’ he added. ‘We shouldn’t settle for industry’s bogus version of data minimization, and we’re grateful the FTC didn’t here.'”
