Advocacy groups call on Colorado lawmakers to strengthen the state’s AI Act
December 10, 2024
EPIC and 12 other national and Colorado-based organizations published an open letter today calling on Colorado lawmakers to strengthen the Colorado AI Act before it goes into effect in 2026.
The letter outlines several provisions in the law that are key to ensuring Colorado workers and consumers are protected from algorithmic discrimination, including a broad definition of what AI systems are covered and a right for individuals to appeal decisions made using AI to a human decisionmaker.
However, key provisions should be strengthened and there are some important protections that are missing entirely from the law. For example, advocates call for a complete prohibition on algorithmic discrimination rather than the current duty of care framework in the letter. The groups also emphasize the need for a private right of action for individuals to enforce their rights under the law.
EPIC has been calling for these elements to be included in effective AI laws beyond Colorado, including in our AI Legislation Scorecard.
