Bloomberg Law: Government Data Buys Put at Risk by High Court’s Geofence Ruling

“The purpose is typically to conduct criminal investigations and immigration-enforcement activities, but the data can also be a tool in investigations related to political activity, such as the Black Lives Matter protests in Ferguson, Mo., following the police killing of Michael Brown, said Jeramie Scott, senior counsel at the Electronic Privacy Information Center.”

“Action from Congress would be the quickest and most decisive way to close the data-broker loophole, but it’s unclear whether that’s a realistic goal, Scott said.”
