The Stakes

We find ourselves in a moment of massive societal transition. Government and corporate powers are coalescing in ways not seen in generations, and the rise of artificial intelligence threatens to fundamentally alter our relationship to technology, human rights, and social structure. Surveillance and the mass-scale extraction of personal data are not inevitable, but stopping their spread requires active advocacy. For 30 years, the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) has been fighting against corporate and government surveillance with the support of people like you.  

The Challenge

We need your partnership. The Big Tech boosters and the cheerleaders of unchecked government surveillance are undoubtedly powerful. But we can fight back through collective action and public participation—you’ve helped us succeed in doing so during EPIC’s fights against TSA’s body scanners, federal attempts to undermine voter privacy, industry efforts to write state privacy laws, and more. You know that EPIC has always been a small organization that punches above our weight, but as the threat of surveillance capitalism has escalated, so too has the need for expert advocates. Your involvement in this work will allow us to meet the moment by ensuring we have the staff necessary to be heard. With you at our side, EPIC will advocate for our positive vision for the future of the internet – one where privacy and innovation exist together.

Why Now

Even with a shift in political perspectives, we know that the American people crave privacy and distance from the prying eyes of corporate and government systems. The momentum is in our favor, but we lack the resources to push strong privacy protections over the finish line. Internet users are increasingly aware of the risks to privacy they face and are calling on their representatives to bolster privacy protections. States are passing stronger privacy laws than they have in the past; regulators also stepping up to shut down harmful surveillance practices. We’re in a moment where we can win back the right to digital self-governance and force a culture shift to one that respects the fundamental right to privacy. The stage is set, and now is the time where you and EPIC can have the largest impact on the future of privacy online.

The Solution

You have seen the impact EPIC can have when we’re in the room. With the support of our generous donors, EPIC staff have been able to advocate in front of dozens of state legislatures for strong privacy protections, file briefs before critical cases in the Supreme Court, affect federal policy by submitting detailed recommendations to agencies advancing privacy rules, and fight against the expansion of government surveillance. EPIC is a leading voice (and sometimes the only voice!) for privacy protections in these spaces. There is more work to do. With your help, EPIC can bring privacy expertise to every room where it is needed. 

We envision a future in which we can live our lives free from constant monitoring, scoring, tracking, and wholesale extraction of human data.  EPIC believes that laws should protect us from abusive and discriminatory data practices and empower us to break free from embedded systems of surveillance capitalism. Who We Are

EPIC is a non-profit organization that works at the intersection of policy, advocacy, and litigation. We pursue a variety of activities, including litigating cases on emerging privacy issues, obtaining and publishing records to lift the veil on government data collection, providing expert advice to policymakers and lawmakers, and facilitating dialogue between advocates, experts, and decisionmakers. Our team includes technology-savvy attorneys and advocates dedicated to serving the public interest.  

We believe that EPIC’s work can help to lead the voices of citizens and advocates alike to overcome the power of Big Tech and Big Government to dominate our information ecosystem. EPIC has supported such collective action in the United States and Europe, including at the state level domestically in California, Maryland, and many other jurisdictions. We work to ensure that there is a voice for internet users who demand “enough is enough.” And we fight every day against the efforts of Big Tech lobbyists to co-opt our laws and to reduce “privacy” protections to useless box-checking exercises.
