EPIC Joins Call for Universities to Dismantle Harmful Campus Surveillance to Defend Free Expression

September 3, 2025

EPIC joined over 30 other rights groups to call on universities take down campus surveillance tools that could be used for future attacks on free expression by the current administration. Specifically, the coalition of groups are urging universities to secure data with end-to-end encryption, delete non-essential sensitive data, and discontinue invasive surveillance among other steps to counter threats to First Amendment protected activities. As the groups noted, “campus surveillance and invasive data collection directly serve the forces seeking to suppress speech and erode the spaces universities provide for political exchange and critical thought.”
