EPIC Deputy Director Caitriona Fitzgerald testified before the Michigan Senate Committee on Finance, Insurance, and Consumer Protection in support of the S1 version of SB 659, the Michigan Personal Data Privacy Act.
This bill places meaningful limits on what personal data businesses can collect about consumers to only what is reasonably necessary for the product or service the consumer requests. Along with this data minimization provision, the bill also contains a strong civil rights protection that would prohibit data-driven discrimination and a ban on the sale of sensitive data.
EPIC testified that passing the S1 version of SB 659 of the Michigan Personal Data Privacy Act would align the state with Maryland, which recently passed a similarly strong privacy law, and ensure that the privacy of Michigan residents is adequately protected.
EPIC commends the Michigan Legislature for considering such a strong privacy bill and urges lawmakers to prioritize passing this legislation.
