The Fight for Privacy Continues
November 6, 2024
The election results are in, and we are preparing for a dramatic transition next year. It is more important than ever to account for power and to hold the powerful to account. EPIC prides itself on being a fierce champion for human rights, and we will fight to protect individuals against data abuse and government and corporate overreach. That fight will continue next year as we brace for new changes and threats of government and corporate overreach.
EPIC is ready and willing to step up when your rights are violated and shine a light in the dark corners where corruption emerges. In 2017, we challenged and stopped President Trump’s so-called “election integrity” commission that would have illegally consolidated nationwide voter data in the White House. And in 2019, we sued to challenge the Department of Commerce attempts to collect citizenship data in the Census.
EPIC will continue to focus on reining in surveillance and protecting sensitive data, including our private communications, our health information, and our location records. The rapid expansion of AI systems has shown that control over our data is essential to preserving liberty and opportunity in a digital ecosystem. But we have seen over the last decade a massive expansion in big tech and government control over our data, and that trend poses an existential threat to our democratic system.
We will continue to center our work on protecting marginalized communities, who have historically been most acutely impacted by surveillance and data discrimination. EPIC is privileged to partner with incredible organizations representing a broad range of constituencies. And we will prioritize sharing our expertise with and boosting the efforts of these communities to resist algorithmic oppression and surveillance overreach.
EPIC’s work is more critical than ever as we move forward into 2025 and beyond. We are ready and willing to act when individual rights are threatened and when government or private actors flaunt the law. Privacy rights are human rights, and just as we have done for 30 years, EPIC will continue to defend them in the years ahead.
