The New York Times: Yes, Your TV Is Probably Spying on You. Your Fridge, Too. Here’s What They Know.

In January 2025, the Electronic Privacy Information Center, along with the Irish Council for Civil Liberties, submitted a complaint and request for investigation to the FTC. The complaint alleges that for a decade, Google, which makes Nest smart-home devices, knowingly sent sensitive user data via real-time bidding to “foreign adversary” countries in violation of federal law. At this writing the FTC has yet to respond to requests for confirmation of any pending investigation.
