Vermont Governor Signs Data Privacy Bill

June 17, 2026

Governor Phil Scott signed S.71, the Vermont Data Privacy and Online Surveillance Act, on June 16th, making Vermont the 23rd state with some form of a general data privacy law.

The law largely follows the laws passed in many other states, which EPIC has criticized for failing to adequately protect consumers. EPIC and Consumer Reports had urged Vermont legislators vote “no” on the bill in the hopes that stronger consumer protections could be put into place.

EPIC will continue to advocate in future sessions for the privacy protections that Vermonters need and deserve.
