EPIC Commends New York Senate for Passing Bill Tackling Algorithmic Discrimination
June 13, 2025

Yesterday, the New York Senate passed the New York AI Act, a bill aimed at preventing algorithmic discrimination.
The bill, sponsored by Sen. Kristen Gonzalez, regulates the development and use of automated decisionmaking systems used in making consequential decisions about New Yorkers, such as decisions about employment, education, housing, or health care.
“EPIC commends Sen. Gonzalez for her leadership in protecting New Yorkers from data-driven harms,” said EPIC Law Fellow Kara Williams. “The New York AI Act prioritizes transparency and accountability in AI development and use and gives people meaningful rights when AI is used to make high-stakes decisions about them. These commonsense protections are urgently needed, and EPIC urges the Assembly to pass this essential legislation.”
The bill now goes to the Assembly, which is in session until June 17.
EPIC filed a memo of support for the New York AI Act and has testified in support of several similar bills across the country.
